Coming from a musical family with eight children, Brenda learned early on how music could affect people. Although she played cello for ten years, Brenda didn't pick up the guitar until the summer after she graduated from high school. She immediately started writing songs, and that fall, while taking a year off before going to college, she started performing in her hometown of Fargo, North Dakota. A self-recorded demo tape caught the attention of Fargo-based independent record label Barking Dog Records, and with their help, she recorded "Trickle Down."
