His early interest in music revolved around gregorian chants and sicilian folk guitar music, but it was only after migrating to Canada that he started to search for his roots. This eventually led him to southern Spain and the art of flamenco. Steeped in tradition, the technical requirements of playing flamenco are considered to be the most difficult and complex in the guitar repertoire. In Andalucia,Roger Scannura learned from the gitanos where he studied with Pepe Habichuela, absorbing the music and lifestyle of the Gypsies. In Canada,Scannura formed Ritmo Flamenco with his wife flamenco dancer Valeria and toured Europe and North America.
"..a gifted composer whose music is as beautiful as it is haunting." -THE GLOBE AND MAIL
