The keyboardist played bass with his left hand and rhythm/lead with his right, while the drummer snapped and popped like Gene Krupa. That's when Stephanie came belting it out like a gospel/tribal exorcism. She reveled in reverb and delay, leaving ears ringing. She jumped about the stage like Jim Morrison at a ballet class."--Ed Schiffler, The Asheville Disclaimer
Enter the Id....your secret arcade of sensuality!... Stephanie's Id, based in Asheville, NC, beguiles audiences with all the surges, pulses, and melodies that can be consummated between a vibraphone, keyboards, a drumkit, and a "hyperactive siren" (Go Triad, Greensboro, NC). Singer Stephanie Morgan, hailing from the western U.S., emotes liberally and "jumps about...like Jim Morrison at a ballet class" (Ed Schiffler, The Asheville Disclaimer), placing idiosyncratic, pictorial lyrics amid long, bended howls. Her vocal style has been compared to that of Bjork, Beth Gibbons of Portishead, and Ella Fitzgerald. Chuck Lichtenberger, pianist and player of the rarish Fender Rhodes Bass, had his rearing in the southeast U.S.; his fingers were trained in classical and jazz methods, allowing him on occasion to pay homage to the masters or to respectfully mock them, imbuing each riff with the libidinal energy of a four-year-old Mozart. Matthew Richmond's musical amour pulses over instruments of percussion; he champions the illustrious vibraphone and is the minister of lambaste to the drumkit. He is a University Instructor by day and frolics in the Id most other times. Cameron Juroff, the son of a short-wave radio wizard and himself an arcade specialist, hones all frequencies, making merry with the drumkit and dabbling in the haunts of the vibes as well. Stephanie's Id delivers modernist lyrics, lush music, and a histrionic live show, stimulating The Indie Magazine to call them "Asheville's next big thing." Their collective influences include Bjork, Miles Davis, Tom Waits, Aerosmith, Ben Folds, Prince, The Cocteau Twins, Paul Simon, U2, Holly Palmer, Radiohead, Stevie Wonder, and James Brown, among others. The band currently tours in the Eastern US in support of their acclaimed debut cd, "Spiral In", released in 2005.
