But's parents forced him to listen at gunpoint to the soundtracks from "Oliver", "HMS Pinafore" and "Annie". Other records in their limited collection were "Beatles;Revolver", "Miles Davis+17", "Arlo Guthrie; Alice's Restaurant", Mozart's "Requiem" and Beethoven's "9th Symphony". Ususally But would try to block out the noise from his parents by banging on pots and pans arranged in the shape of Ed Shaughnessy's drum kit from the Johnny Carson Show. But's Dad made the mistake of showing him a few chords on a baritone ukelele and thus But's guitar journey started. But learned all the barbershop quartet songs his parents would sing and he'd annoy them by taking long solos over their singing. Usually this happened on long car rides. But's sister, Lisa "But" Browning, would scream at the top of her lungs when But did this, that made But proud. But's dad, Paul "But" Kumpel, is a Mathematician at SUNY, Stony Brook and has fiddled with a piano for most of his life, especially around holidays. But's mom, Carol "But" Landis, is a talented organist/pianiast at several local churches and attended the prestigious Eastman School of Music. She helped But figure out a Rush song when he got his first guitar by slowing down a record player and finding the fast notes at half speed. This electronic nature of music has plagued But ever since. He got a wah wah. He moved it around alot. He started his first band at age 8. "The Pilgrim Players" it was called. It consisted of all the local kids who would do whatever But said. All the girls were scared to play with him because of his reputation for being a "girl's boy". But played a borrowed electric guitar through his father's Wollensack reel to reel tape deck. The tape deck never sounded the same after that. But wrote his first song, "I Just Want To Be Free, F R E E E" at age 5. MP3 file available soon.
